What is skin tone?

Your skin tone also called undertone is not the same as complexion, it is the color of your skin beneath the surface. It’s determined by your genes and it will never change, no matter how much sun you get.

There are three different types of skin tone:

  2. Warm, and
  3. Neutral.

Knowing which type of skin tone you have can be really helpful in figuring out which colors look best on you, and also what are the best skincare supplement you should be using.

How Do I Know My Skin Undertone?

Figuring out your skin undertone is easy, and there are a few ways to do it. Follow this simple process to figure out your skin undertone.

Prepare Your Skin

Start with taking a bath or shower to make your skin free of any lotion, sweat, or makeup.

After washing your skin, take a few minutes for your skin to rest and be free of redness from scrubbing.

Find a Bright Light or Natural light

The next step is to find a source of bright light, that could be going outdoor but don’t get in the sunlight.

Note that direct sunlight can affect the way your skin looks and prevent you from getting the right result, also some light bulbs can give different colors to your skin.

Therefore, try using natural light without direct sunlight.

The Vein Test

While your skin is prepared, hold up your arm and look at the veins on your wrist. If they are blue or purple, then you have a cool skin undertone. If they are green, then you have a warm skin undertone. If they are basically the same color as your skin, then you have a neutral skin undertone.

Another way to test your skin undertone is to look at the color of your skin next to a silver or white object.

If your skin looks better against silver, then you have a cool skin undertone. If it looks better against white, then you have a warm skin undertone.

If it doesn’t really make much difference, then you have a neutral skin undertone.

What to Do With Your New Knowledge

There are a few things you can do now that you know your skin tone. One is to choose the right colors to wear.

Man Choosing Clothes

If you have a cool skin tone, you’ll look best in colors like white, black, gray, navy blue, and jewel tones.

If you have a warm skin tone, you’ll look best in colors like cream, camel, olive green, golden yellow, and orange.

And if you have a neutral skin tone (lucky you!), you’ll look great in just about any color.

Another thing you can do with this knowledge is to choose the right makeup shades (women).

If you have a cool skin tone, you should use a foundation that has a pink or beige undertone.

If you have a warm skin tone, your foundation should have a yellow or golden undertone.

And if you have a neutral skin tone, you can pretty much use any foundation color.

Which Skin Tone is Most Attractive?

There is no definitive answer to this question. However, research has shown that skin tones with warmer undertones are generally seen as more attractive than those with cooler undertones.

Also, a new study by Missouri School of Journalism researcher Cynthia Frisby found that people perceive a light brown skin tone to be more physically attractive than a pale or dark skin tone.

What Skin Tone Do Men and Women Prefer?

According to scientists researching attractiveness in males and females, men of all races are subconsciously drawn to fairer-skinned women, while women are drawn to darker-complexioned males.
